WFH volunteer &/or woodworking apprentice w some exp?

Hey!

I’ve been in once before and got one authorization and then time/money/parenting got in the way. I really want to do more with woodworking and have a bunch of scraps in my garage to work with. I have some experience as my BA is in theatre arts and I worked in the scene shop both for credit and as a part time job. I used miter saws, table saws, and circular saws and I used powered sanding tools. At my house I have a mini-lathe that I don’t really have a great place to set up, a circular saw, a jigsaw and a bunch of hand tools for whittling. I’d really like to learn more and just help some advanced woodworker and learn as I go. I’m happy to do the sanding if that’s what you want! I’m definitely interested in learning luthier work as well since I am a violinist and learning ukulele (my husband is actually good at it).

I’m unemployed/SAHM w a 3yo so my schedule is not the same as most folks. I’m free during the day mostly and not as much on nights and weekends though I can do it occasionally with lots of advanced notice.

Also, I’d love to volunteer more in general, but, due to those factors, I can’t really be there during evenings and weekends. I’d be happy to do clerical work on my computer from afar if there are tasks like that which could be shared with me. Things like scheduling, copy-editing, writing wiki entries or something or idek what you need but I have 3 Masters and a PhD and I temped in NYC, so hopefully there’s something I can do for you guys from afar.

Well…

I have a project in the wood shop that I’m trying to work on, but keep finding other things that need doing. It’s a little free library for a pre-school. We have done 3 of them for the pre-school, and they would like one more for their Flint location. I have a concept, and the basic box is done, but there is still lots of room for creativity yet. If you’re interested, let me know, and I’ll send more details, or we can meet in the space and you can see what’s there so far.

Welcome! If you’re looking for WFH-friendly volunteering, there might be some admin or social media tasks — worth asking the leadership team. Hope you find something that fits your schedule.

I’d love to! I also am about to make another post about a bunch of free wood in my neighborhood, so please check that out too!

If you’re replying to the part about the library, then great. (Not that the social media/admin stuff isn’t great, too!)

If you want to talk about the library, I am usually in on Thursday evenings from 5-8 PM for authorizations/checkouts, and you can drop in then to see what I have in mind. Except that I won’t be in this Thursday (oct 22), and I’m out of town this weekend. So Oct 29 is the next Thursday time. Reply here if you want to help on the library, and we will figure a time to meet and talk.

Also - even though regular volunteers get a discount on membership, this time isn’t part of that, unless the leadership people approve it for that. But it’s still a fun way to get in, make sawdust, and be creative.
