Temporary Forge

The classic forge is out of commission for a bit while we wait for some refractory cement to dry. However we do have a temporary replacement up and running. It runs similarly to our old one, though with a few key differences.

  1. It does not used forced air. The air comes through and adjustable gap at the top of the burner. Cooling will take a lot longer with this one.
  2. Pressure is adjusted via a red valve near the propane tank. We have it dialed in fairly well, so it shouldn’t need too much adjustment.
  3. It gets HOT. It does not contain hear as well as the old one, so PLEASE do not touch it or place anything on the stand with it.
  4. It has a nice graphite plate at the bottom, which is relatively sturdy, but please don’t toss anything heavy on it.

Starting it and turning it off is similar to the old one, just with an additional valve along the gas line. Anyone who is checked out on the older forge can use the temporary one, as long as you feel comfortable doing so. If you have and questions feel free to ask @AdamT or myself.

The new forge will reliably pop and make a hissing sound that doesn’t seem normal. How are you preventing that in your operation?

That’s an indicator of poor gas mixture. The psi on the propane tank might be getting low, or the flow asjuster was turned down too low. Alternatively, try adjusting the air intake to be a bit more open.
With these burners, the gas has to be coming out strongly in order to suck enough air into the burner to keep a good flame. If the air pressure coming in is too low, you’ll basically have a backfire in the tube.

The pressure is all the way open, it’s a new tank, and the Venturi is all the way open

Hmmm… the only other thing i can think of is if there is a breeze in the shop from the door being open. Sometimes if there is airflow ofer the top, it’ll break the vacuum the burner creates and cause the same issue.

The door is closed. This happens in any and all conditions. It’s delayed when both forge doors are open, but it still happens

I’ll take a look at it tonight. The good news is that the original forge should be up and running by this weekend.
