Router Checkout

I need to use a router to cut a slot in one part of my shelf. The cut is pretty simple; I’m cutting through finished 1/4" plywood, and the slot needs to be about 100mm long (the exact length isn’t critical) and cut with a 1/4" bit. I’m not sure if LMN has a hand router, but that would be more than sufficient for what I need to do.

I can swing by next Thursday if @Tony is going to be there for weekly woodshop checkouts, but if anyone is around today that can do a checkout on any of the available routers, I can come by during open hours today.

I won’t be at the space today, but will tomorrow afternoon, around 3-5 pm or so. If that fits your schedule, stop by. There is a doorbell by the front door that rings in the shop. Or you can come to the overhead door by the loading dock, and knock loudly. I do plan to be there Thursday evening for checkouts.

I don’t know the details of what you want, but I have a bit of reservation in cutting this slot in plywood with a router. The layers can tend to splinter easier than solid wood. But I’m willing to try it, and see. If you have some cutoff or scrap material, we can try this then before cutting the real thing.

Thursday is fine, this isn’t an urgent need.

My goal is to cut a slot in the lid of the shelf I built so I can thread 3D printer filament through it. While I could simply drill a hole, I’d prefer a slot so that the filament can move freely back and forth in line with the print head.

The slot itself doesn’t have to be completely smooth; I’m planning to print a grommet such as this one that will cover the edges of the hole:

This is approximately where I’d like the hole. The crossbar middle will eventually be where I mount the filament holder, so I don’t want to route through that:

We ended up using a hand saw and a drill to cut the slot. With a custom grommet based on the actual slot length (97.5mm), everything looks pretty seamless! Thanks @Tony!
