I love how busy our Metalsmithing area has become. It’s fun & interesting to be around other smiths, chat & see what they’re making! With more members using this area it’s even more important that we are mindful of how we are taking care of our space. We’re all makers & messes are inevitable. No one is looking for perfection. Our space needs each of us to clean up any messes we’ve made, instead of leaving it for other members to attend to. It’s a real downer to arrive, ready to create, only to find you need to clean up someone else’s mess.
Gentle reminders:
More specifically, b/c this is what I’m seeing on a regular basis: If something spills, please clean it up thoroughly. If you create dust, metal scrap, trash, liquid spills, etc of any kind, please sweep it or wipe it up. If the dust or metal scrap was made on any of the tables (from sanding, filing, drilling, sawing or using borax or baking soda), it can be quickly dusted off, into the garbage, or vacuumed up w/ the hand held vacuum that is stored, on the shelf, on the wooden table at the head of the soldering table.
If you notice the trash bins are full or nearly full, please empty them.
Please remember to neatly return tools back to their area of storage. Sometimes, I find them just thrown, in a jumble, on top of one another or left out on the center table.
Please remember we are ONLY working in these metals, within this area: Copper, Sterling Silver, Fine Silver, Brass, Bronze, Gold & Gold Filled. This is super important! We need to make sure we are not creating cross contamination issues or damaging any of our tools. The metals we are NOT working in, within this area: Steel, Pewter, Aluminum, Iron, mystery metals, etc. Please also do all of your woodworking related projects within the woodworking area.
I’ve included just a couple of photos of the messes found in the Metalsmithing area, yesterday. There were a lot + the drill press was used to drill a contaminating metal.
Thank you for taking the time to read this & for helping our community to continue creating a welcoming, safe, clean & fun space to create in. ~ Heather ![]()
