We are hosting some cub scouts and their parents on Monday and Tuesday, Feb 2 and 3, 6-7:30 pm, to help them cut out their Pinewood Derby cars. Basically, they will cut the cars to shape and sand them, using hand tools. I’m looking for 1-2 volunteers each night to assist. The kids will do the work themselves, but we will demonstrate safe tool usage, prep any materials needed, etc. If you’re interested, reply here with which day you’d like to help.
I will help. Either day works for me.
I can help either day too!
BTW if we want more/weirder hand tools, I have a set of spoke shaves I could bring in, plus a shaving horse + draw knife. ![]()
Count me in for both nights!
Great! George and Maria, pick whichever day you want, and post it here. If you want to work both days, that’s good as well.
Maria, the hand tools may or may not be useful on the cars. The blank they start with is about 2 x 2 x 7", and may be too small to do much. But lets get together when i get back, and see what we can do with hem anyway.
If the kids are trying to win, they’ll be making glorified door stops (ie wedges) and maybe carving a relief in the underside so they can attach a weight. If they’re going for looks, who knows? ![]()
Both nights are fine for me!
There is a lot of material online about how to make a winning Pinewood Derby car. Feel free to search for it. My goal here is to try to help the kids learn to use tools safely and inspire their creativity, while we work in a few things that will make the cars faster.
Sounds good!
