Old Jet lathe speed problem

Hello all. I just joined and I’m not sure of proper etiquette for general questions in this forum. I have a question though for all lathe folks.

I just acquired an older Jet lathe (JWL1236) that hasn’t been used in years. The motor seems fine. The pulleys appear to separate. The speed is wicked fast regardless of the lever position. Slow speed is faster than my Delta lathe at max speed. Does anyone know if there’s a way to slow it down? Is there a place I can take the headstock for any repair? The Jet lathe seems much more stable. I’d love to use it.

Thank you all

I’m pretty sure it can be repaired. The makerspace has a Delta lathe that is probably a match. It sounds like your Reeves sheave is stuck closed. As the pulley widens and narrows by a lever the speed changes. I can help you look at it or at least show you how it should work if you want to bring it in.

I can bring it in sometime. Let me know your availability.

Thank you
