Musicians and instrument makers wanted

I can do a “demonstration” on making a fret board (15-20 mins) and I would like to make a pitch at some point (maybe at the end of the meeting) for an instrument maker group to meet at LMN monthly (also 15-20 mins). I will also have a couple finished ukes to show, I will play a tune (mercifully short) and say just a bit about what I do. And I have a pvc flute to show that I recently made, with a link to a YouTube video with instructions, so anyone interested could also make that simple flute. I will be at LMN on Thursday about 4pm.

I believe it was to allow art to be more intense than pg13
If you’re comfortable with r rated language and it potentially being quite loud, feel free to bring Olli

That sounds wonderful!

One more item: I understand that a monthly meeting of a group like I have in mind can meet at LMN free of charge? I have been told that (I forget by whom) and want to say that in the pitch for the group, also making it clear that folks need to pay for membership to actually work on instruments at LMN.

Short answer, yes!
They’d all need to sign liability waivers, and we’d need to talk about how many people, and a few other things.
I’m planning on being at LMN by 5 tomorrow, and can speak about it once we’re set up for the event

Great, see ya there.

I really enjoyed the open mic thing the other day. If you want to schedule another, you can put me down for a demo, how-to for a pvc flute (I’m no expert, but can give a simple demo, printed instructions, and refer to a good YouTube video on it). On another topic: I’d like to put a meeting for the proposed DIY Instrument Makers Group on the schedule, then go about publicizing it. No prep on your part except for the thing about filling me in on getting waivers signed. We would just sit around a table and chew the fat, basically, maybe take a walk around the joint. How about Jan 23, Thursday, during open hours, starting 6.30?

I’m a new member who builds modular synthesizers and would love to participate in an open mic if you do another!

I’m Dave Raber, member of a few months now, and I build alternative ukuleles (mostly acoustic so far), and I’m trying to get together a group, to meet at LMN probably monthly, for makers of all sorts of diy musical instruments. So far a few people have expressed an interest–an electronic builder, a flute maker, a maker of medieval and folk instruments, myself and possibly one other. A pretty good start! I’d like to have our initial meeting in January. Can I put you on the list for trying this out? If so you can give me your email, and I will keep you informed. raberdavid@yahoo.com The open mic thing, btw, is independent of this thing I’m talking about, but can also be a great opportunity to “show and tell” for instrument makers. I was at the recent open mic thing, and it was a great time.

Sounds great! nickpmulder@gmail.com

I put this on the calendar! Would you be willing to write a quick blurb of what it should say?

Because this is during open hours, our front desk volunteers can handle all of the waivers and such. Nothing extra for you to do there.

Sounds great, and we are headed down that road. I’ll get back to you with a blurb–right now I’m making a poster (flyer) to hype the event. I’ll send you both soon.

@Douglas

THE BLURB (edit or add as you see fit–trying to keep this minimal yet descriptive and enticing!):

DIY INSTRUMENT MAKERS GROUP

For makers of ALL types of instruments, and open to the public free of charge–a group to share info, plans and projects. Experienced crafters and beginners welcome. Bring your work, your ideas, your questions, your goals.

I saw this at the Holt library today!

First meeting we had 10+ interested people, from experienced makers to people starting out. I am giving announcements, etc. via email, with a list now up to 15 people. To get on the list, email me at raberdavid@yahoo.com, and/or just show up. We will still be orienting, organizing, and will have some substantive things going on as well. You can come with questions about getting started in the craft of instrument making (whatever instrument), and you will get some answers. If you have built an instrument–or many–come with your work for show and tell.
