Hi there, I’m looking for 8 gauge black annealed iron wire, I need it for making sculptures but I can’t find it anywhere… I’ve checked Alro steel, Friedland and some other companies, also I couldn’t find it at Home depot and some other similar shops, they have around 14 or 16 gauge which is too thin for me, I found it at websites yhat they sell it per ton, I need may be a few lb s every couple of months. I would appreciate if somebody guide me on this matter.
Thank you
Siamak
if you can go to 9 gauge you can shop here.
Thank you very much James, this is a good one, I think I will purchase from them if I can’t find the exact thing.
(I’m still searching for lower amount cause they sell in 50 lbs, and gauge 8 if any body knows where I can find)
I wonder if you might be able to get something thicker and draw it out to the guage you need - not sure if the rolling mill in jewelry can do iron (@Heather @Lou @Arialia - what do you guys think?) but I bet the guillotine tool would work if we made top and bottom plates with the right size grooves drilled out.
( Alternatively - does this stuff look right? )
Thank a lot Maria, I’ve checked the link, it seems those are quite different from what I’m looking for, I also think making that specific diameter with the jewelry tools is not possible cause these are for softer metals like silver, plus if we do cold working on iron wire it becomes hard and fragile, I’m looking for black annealed wire cause they are kind of flexible and can be used to shape the early form of the sculpture just like the pen drawing that you do before start painting.
I think I have two ways until now:
- get more pounds and gauge 9 from trusupply
- Get a thicker plate at Alro and ask them to cut narrow strips from it if they would
But thank you again for your consideration, I really appreciate it
Hi Siamak, I don’t know where to find any locally, but I will ask around. There are a few metal artists in my welding class that might know.
I appreciate you being mindful of the jewelry equipment! The equipment is meant for softer metals, like you said. We ask that members use the area for silver, copper, brass, bronze, and gold.
Thats great @Arialia, thank you so much.
I also wanted to ask about the metal shear that is in the jewelry area, can that be used for cutting iron sheets gauge 16 and thinner?
The one that looks like this picture:
Hi. I’m agreeing with Siamak’s reasoning on not using the rolling press for iron. And I suggest consulting with @Heather on the shear… some of the jewelry area tools are geared only for certain metals to avoid contamination.
Hi, Siamak! I greatly appreciate you respecting the jewelry area & checking in here before using iron in that area. All of the tools within the jewelry area, including the shear, are to only be used w/ copper, sterling & fine silver, brass, bronze & gold metals. Any other metals (steel, iron, pewter, aluminum) will contaminate silver & gold. Iron & steel will damage the the rollers on the rolling mill.
Thank you for asking!
This is where search history annoys me, bet we could all search the same thing on our personal computer and come up with different answers. I stumbled upon a taxidermy site that sells individual pieces it appears.
Straight Steel Wire (Annealed) - Matuska Taxidermy Supply Company
By the time you get what you need might be further ahead to buy purchase the 50 ft roll, or seeing if there are any other artists looking for some to share the roll with.
It is a little stiff, Quality Ferm and Fleet sells 12 gauge.
Thank you very much Trogo, I’ve checked the link and I think I’ll call them and ask about the quantity and…
About the 50 lbs roll, the shipping cost almost twice of the price of the roll itself!! So I completely forget about it, I want to try the twisted gauge 14 and see what can I do…
Thanks Mark, did you saw that in their shop or on their website? I can’t find anything online…
Yeah, sure, thank for explanation.
I saw it on the website. If you can deal with the rust they also have 9 gauge fence wire.
On their website I can’t find any thing that match, the most similar thing is 9 gauge galvanized wire that can not be weld, could you please send me the link from what you found…
