Introduction-Troy Gordon

I grew up on a small farm and miss having all kinds of heavy tools to work with, welders, torches, drill press etc. In attempt to scratch that itch started gardening and working with small engines. Considered purchasing my own lathe to play with at home and stumbled upon this group so started trolling to learn more about it. Saw the post about the maker event next Saturday volunteered, look forward to meeting some of you in person.

Couple weeks ago my son (10) and I stopped by and took a tour, he sure got excited about the 3-D printer, myself the engine lathe and mill that is a work in progress. Then I saw the trebuchet and post about flinging pumpkins (unfortunately could not attend but would gladly assist in the “disposal” of some now that halloween has passed), there are some of my people in this place. You know the ones who like to take risks and do things with a certain level of danger.

I do have a couple projects I would like to do and am wondering about getting checked out on the engine lathe, drill press, and 3-d printer some time.

Enjoy the nice fall weather we are having and look forward to meeting more of you Saturday!!

Hi Troy, welcome to the space!
I’ll be at LMN Sunday evening for Open Stitch but could step away and get you a 3d printer checkout at 6pm, if that works for you

@leif_swanson , would you want to do it? If not, I can

Troy, are you looking for a checkout on the drill press in the wood shop, or machine shop? I can do the one in the wood shop. Carl may want to do the checkout on the drill in the metal shop.

Tony

Sorry, I should have added that my schedule is fairly open. If you have a time in mind or when you’re available, please post it.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

@Evelyn Sunday would only be available until about 4:30.

@Tony looking to get checked out on the drill press in the metal shop, but soon enough will be looking to do some stuff with wood. Son was excited to see the nice collection of tools compared to what we used at home to make a bench this summer, he got tired of hand cutting the boards for his 4-H project.

For availability Monday and Friday are my only no go days. Sunday until about 4:30, though hope to plant some garilc this weekend, Thursday until 6:30, and this weekend Saturday after the Hackathon I would be available.

How about this Thursday at 11 or noon or so? We can cover a few tools in 1-2 hours. But the cutoff has to be 1 pm. I will working with someone on another project then.

Thank you @Tony, I should be able to be there about 11:00/11:30 on Thursday. Excited to see more in depth what LMN has to offer, make some chips, and soon some sparks!!!

Is there anything I need to bring besides safety glasses and steel toe shoes?

Safety glasses and hearing protection are available at the space, but you are welcome to bring your own. Steel toed boots are not required , but you can wear them if you like, of course. No open toe footwear, no gloves, no loose or dangling things like hoodie strings, long hair, jewelry, please. If you have these, they need to be tucked inside your shirt, or tied back behind your head.

@Tony thank you for taking time to cover the planer and table saw today, looking forward to using them in the future.

@RealCarlRaymond I would still like to get checked out on the engine lathe and metal drill press. If you could guide me to someone to assist with that it would be appreciated.

@trogo, would a weekend evening work for a metal lathe / drill checkout? I’ve got a commitment on Saturday until 4:00pm, and Sunday I’m running a woodshop checkout all afternoon. I could meet you either evening to get you going.

Saturday would work great for me, will be there for the hackathon and we can start after that is finished!

@trogo have you had your 3d printer checkout?

Very good for a lathe checkout after the workshop today.

@Evelyn I have not done the 3-D printer checkout yet, would some time Sunday work for you?
