Anyone interested in building some Little Free Libraries for a non-profit?

We received the following request. Is anyone interested in making these?

I am a regional director of a non-profit early learning program in four different locations. We are looking to make the lending libraries to give families access to free books. However, no one is talented enough to make them and to buy form the Little Library they are close to or over $400. I did apply for a scholarship, however is there anyone who would be willing to make them as a donation? We would be able to display the name of the person or Lansing Makers on our recognition board at our Walter French location. Three out of our four locations are in what is classified at risk communities and the access to books are also limited for some.

Thank you for your consideration!

Will they provide plans, or at least a model to copy? Also, will they provide materials? Are they willing to paint or otherwise finish the final products? When do they want them?

I would echo Tony’s questions. I may be willing to help them out but need more info.

I emailed them back asking these questions and will report back!

I spotted a little free library, and snapped a couple of pictures. I talked to the owner a bit as well. She thought the $400 figure would be for all 4 libraries. Buying one also gets your LFL registered, and comes with the numbered plaque.

Construction looks pretty basic, and we could probably do a couple with material on hand. But i look forward to seeing what Lex learns from the requester.

Thank you so much for your interest in supporting our programs with this project! I am open to any style for a little library, and I am more than happy to reach out to Home Depot for supplies as needed. As a program, we are not always handy and needing 4 so we can have one at each location seemed a challenge.

I did look into buying, but that was the close to $400 each for the completed item and the plaque registering it. As 3 of the 4 locations will be connected to low-income housing locations, we are hopeful to provide books for the community.

Regina, i found a wide variety of different plans, styles, sizes, etc in the little libraries online, from utilitarian to whimsical. It looks like there are no standardized plans.

Do you have any requirements, sizes, guidelines, etc we could use for this effort?

Thank you, Jonathan. Help is always appreciated.

I don’t have a definite time yet. I’m waiting to hear back from Regina as to plans, materials, etc. If you have any ideas on either, post them here.

Thank you so much and also to Jonathan for your help. I would love whatever you would like to or able to make. The programs are for infant through school age; however, we host at two locations GED programs. Books within will be aimed at those levels for size and creativity thoughts. They would be outside, so as long as they will withstand Michigan weather that is all that matters.

Henlo. I’m new, but I would be willing to do some work for this project. If materials are provided, I can paint/stain, or whatever is needed. Just let me know when the plan starts to come together.

I will be in the Space this thursday oct 23 for open checkout night. Let’s meet at 7 pm in the break room.

Anyone interested in helping build little libraries can come in that night, and we can talk about this. Bring pictures, plans, or ideas if you have them. Regina, if you’re available, your input would be valuable.

I plan to come in tomorrow with at least some scrap material to rough out a design for this. I should be there from around 3:30 until maybe 8 PM. Drop by if interested. This will be woodworking portion of the project, not painting yet. But all are welcome.

If these libraries are $400, and it looks like they have about $10 worth of materials, and we have all the equipment to make them very quickly, have we thought about selling them?

Just putting that out there.
