Pre-test-class prep work - spoons & handles

@bjadms8 mentioned to me an extremely cool class we used to run: make a spoon (2 sessions to do a metal spoon with a wooden handle) and then have an ice-cream social at the end of class.

I think it would be awesome to do this class in Summer. We could do a metal only spoon in 1 session pretty easily, but I’d love to do turned wood handles.

Next things we need before we even can run a tester class:

  • instructor who knows how to make the handles
  • instructor who knows how to make the metal spoon - I can teach this or train someone else in teaching this, but I’ll need to learn how to put a handle first, so I’ll know how to do the tang
  • both instructors should know how to assemble the spoon, since the step 2 instructor has to do it and the step 1 instructor will have to know if their spoon part will work for it

@cafwood - could you train someone in handle making? would you be interested in being the instructor yourself? (I’d be happy to learn, but it’d be really nice to get more people teaching too!)

Does anyone want to be involved in developing / teaching this class? We can get a little working group together and start on the next steps.

Interesting, I spent the weekend demonstrating spoon carving.

This is hilarious. I was JUST talking to my sister about an hour ago, telling her that I wanted to learn how to make spoons and I bet someone here at LMN would know how…and then I log in to see this!

I bet you could make a spoon in every area of the shop - carved wood spoon, blacksmithed spoon, glass spoon slumped in the kiln, copper spoon, spoon made on the metal CNC mill, 3d printed spoon… okay, I admit I’m a little stuck on electronics, but you could at least bedazzle a pre-existing spoon with LEDs!

Meat turner for with a bottle opener would also be good for outdoor cooking
