The lapidary equipment was moved to the “temporary” storage area just inside Ironworks. I think most of it is @BrianBaldwin’s personal equipment
Yes; I’m able to approve new SOP’s. Typically you work in 3’s, including someone who is experienced in writing SOP’s + is hopefully familiar w/ the tool/equipment; especially, if there is not a manual that accompanies the tool/equipment. Often times a manual can be found online & printed. It is nice to have that to go along w/ the SOP, if possible. Someone will also need to take pictures of the equipment to match up w/ the SOP instructions.
I have some recent experience with lapidary equipment that I could help here. But first I think you should obtain the models and the manufactures of the equipment you have.
Okay, disappointing. Within the jewelry area, what is available for use/checkout?
According to my notes:
Available with checkout:
Acetylene Torch
Little Smith Torch w/ O2 and Propane
Small Drill Press (checkout on any drill press OK)
@Heather do the Flex Shafts need a checkout?
Checkout is asking if you haven’t used it before:
1" Vertical Power Sander
6" Shear + Mini-shear
Rolling Mill
All the hand tools on the cart (including the ring bender)
No; the flex shafts do not need checkouts.
Would you like a checkout in the jewelry area?
Sorry. I never saw this reply.
I could meet with you this evening.
Thank you for the offer, but I will defer on this
Sounds good! Does 6:30 pm work for you?
Thanks, Heather! Noted it down
Yes, that will work.
The saw is a Beacon Star model TC-1. The company no longer exists, but was apparently bought out by another company, perhaps Diamond Star which maybe became Bianca Diamond. I was unable to find a manual, though at some point someone was selling copies on eBay for $15. I found manuals for similar current generation models that may be useful.

- Beacon Star saw ran and looked good to us (I’d use it! It has a sweet little feed system that’ll definitely save us on bent and banged up blades)
- how we use the grinding wheels depends on how many random bench grinders and random motors the space has sitting around, but we should be able to work something out
- the other saw with the super thick grinding wheel as blade we’re not confident in what it’s used for, so unless someone else (@BrianBaldwin ?) can tell us we wouldn’t want to use it
It looks like there are three bench grinders.
One is a Poly Products D14

One, or perhaps both of the other ones are Covington heavy duty grinder polishers. https://currentlyrockhounding.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/400_592_inst.pdf.
I didn’t see the bases, motors or belts that would go with these grinders. The motor in the pile is 1/4 hp and runs at 1725 rpm. It might work, though the Covington grinder said it came with a 1/2 hp motor.
Did you succeed in contacting Brian Baldwin to understand the status of the equipment?
Thanks
Not yet, thanks for reminding me - the only contact I have for @BrianBaldwin is via the talksite. I’ll message you both about the equipment.
@Heather @Jcard1415 do either of you two happen to have any alternate ways to contact Brian B?
This is the only way I have to contact Brian B.
I have resources at William Holland Lapidary School that I can Tap for information on equipment. The current standard at the school for grinding and polishing is the 6 wheel Cab King. Retails for 1,399 or so. I will reach out on the Facebook group on the equipment.
